Am I correct in thinking that the sentence "You conocía bien la historia" means that his father told him what he had already known before (i.e. he
had already known that story of disappearance of Ambrose Bierce)?

Thank you.

It could be that his father had told him the story before and decided to rehearse it or it could also be that the son was already aware of the story (hearing or reading the story before, on his own). Either way it happened, he knew the story well.
But it seems that the stuff his father said later, about no one finding the bones of Bierce, was an addition to the story that perhaps the boy hadn't heard before.
Your guess is as good as mine.

As Rusty said, "Yo conocía bien la historia" means that the subject is well known to the narrator, whether it was already told by his father or because he had read about it before. But as the author says, when you're accompanying someone in a bad situation, you tend to fill the silence with conversations that you already had, or talk about things that aren't necessarily interesting, so I think it's more likely that his father had told the anecdotes before.
