Hola a todos,

La frase en cuestión es del libro Tinta invisible de Javier Peña.

Existe una antigua leyenda sobre Homero que representa uno de los peligros que acechan a quien habita el mundo de las historias. Ante la tumba de Aquiles, Homero habría solicitado contemplar el escudo y la armadura que el dios Hefesto forjó para el héroe. Cuenta la leyenda que el brillo sobrenatural de la obra del herrero de los dioses cegó al aedo para siempre. Ese fue el precio que Homero hubo de pagar por su exceso de curiosidad, el castigo a su ansia por ver más de lo que debía.

I think "habría solicitado contemplar" means "habría pedido que se le permitiese verlos." But what's the meaning of condicional compuesto (habría solicitado), why is it used here? Does it mean the same as preterito simple (solicitó contemplar)? Or does it imply perhaps/probably?

The author has already stated that this is a legend. So he is using "habría solicitado", since we don't have so many certainties about the actual life of Homer.
The sentence would mean something like "Homer was supposed to have asked to see the weapons".

He could have said "Homero solicitó contemplar...", but in that case, the sentence would mean this is a fact.
