La frase en cuestión es del libro Tinta invisible de Javier Peña.

Hace unos meses, mientras terminaba de reunir la documentación para este libro, descubrí que una de las vidrieras de la iglesia episcopal de Dayton, en Ohio, contiene la efigie de C. S. Lewis, el autor de Las crónicas de Narnia. En el vitral el escritor británico aparece con chaqueta y corbata; el león de Narnia se acurruca a sus pies y un cohete espacial escupe fuego a su espalda. El conjunto es tan kitsch que resulta atractivo, pero lo que impacta no es tanto el retrato como el lugar en que está ubicado: un escritor entre imágenes de santos.

La investigación que he realizado no ha hecho sino corroborar mi impresión inicial de que los escritores encajarían en cualquier lugar salvo en un vitral entre santos. No ha hecho sino confirmar mi idea acerca de los grandes narradores: seres heridos, narcisistas incorregibles, incapaces de sobrellevar el éxito, inútiles para soportar el fracaso. ¿Cómo esas personas que han escrito páginas maravillosas pueden ser a menudo seres humanos tan sospechosos? ¿Qué sentido tiene dedicar una vidriera en una iglesia a un miembro del gremio menos santo del mundo?

In what meaning is the word “suspicious” used - in the first or in the second? Or both at once? Or is it a deliberately ambiguous use?

In other words, do writers (according to the author - "seres humanos tan sospechosos") have a very suspicious mind?

No. It means that the person is of suspicious character. I would be interested to know if the work is a translation from English, because it seems like a very use of the word suspicious. Although it probably works the same way in Spanish.

Thanks. Now I know that sospechoso can mean questionable in Spanish as it can be in English.

I agree with Poli.
The word here, seems to work just as its equivalent in English.

I suppose the author used the word to underline the fact that saints should be consistent in their private and public lives, but writers aren't. It looks like Javier Peña takes them for tormented souls, sinners, hypocrites...
