Hola a todos,

La frase en cuestión es del libro Tinta invisible de Javier Peña.

Cuentan que cuando David Foster Wallace estaba inmerso en la gira de La broma infinita y viajó a Nueva York, se detenía a contemplarlo todo y todo lo maravillaba. Eh, fijaos en esto, echadle un ojo a aquello otro, qué increíble eso de más allá. Esa de Wallace era la mirada del escritor. Es cierto que su capacidad para observar y su velocidad para procesar lo que veía era muy superior a la media, Mary Karr dijo de él que parecía ver un fotograma por segundo más que el resto de los seres humanos. Pero no es necesario, en absoluto, ser un superdotado como Wallace para mirar de esa manera.

Lo fascinante de aquella gira de La broma infinita es que las personas que lo acompañaban durante el viaje se dieron cuenta de que, cuando estaban junto a Wallace, él conseguía que ellos vieran más de lo que sus ojos solían mostrarles.

I'm wondering what the phrase “se detenía a contemplarlo todo” might imply in the above context.

For example: On his way to New York, he would stop the car in one city or another, get out and look around. Could something like this be the case?

That he stopped, took everything in (contemplated it all), and marveled at everything gives us plenty of room to make up our mind about how incredible his "gift of sight" was. (I'm reminded of how much more a child seems to be truly overwhelmed with new places when presented with the chance to get out and have a look at something new to them.)
It says that those who traveled with him (most likely in a touring bus) got to see more than what their own eyes were used to seeing (capturing), so he was definitely gifted that way (seeing more than others could see).
