Habremos dejado en el camino

Hola a todos,

La frase en cuestión es del libro Tinta invisible de Javier Peña.

Evidentemente, para ser un buen escritor es imprescindible saber escribir bien. No creo que esta afirmación sea demasiado sorprendente. ¿Pero cuánta gente hay en el mundo que escribe bien? Y dentro de los que escriben bien, ¿qué diferencia a quie- nes tienen éxito de los que no? ¿Y a quienes son genios de los que no? Ya hemos mencionado a Kafka varias veces en este libro. De no ser por la traición y el empeño de Max Brod, su nombre habría caído en el olvido. ¿Cuántos kafkas sin maxbrods habremos dejado en el camino? Minimizar el papel de la suerte en la configuración del canon cultural me parece una enorme ingenuidad. Minimizar el papel de la suerte en nuestra existencia me parece un ejercicio de soberbia que suelen llevan a cabo los más favorecidos por ella.

I'm not sure what "dejar en el camino" means (in the above context) and the use of Futuro Compuesto seems a bit confusing to me, so I'm not sure what the writer means by that sentence.

My guess is: Many talented writers (like Kafka) remained unknown to us/to the general public because there were no people like Max Brod.

Your guess is right.

"Dejar en el camino" is figurative speech, like when you walk along a road and you leave things behind, aware or unaware of them.

El futuro aquí expresa suposición, duda o posibilidad. La forma compuesta nos dice que se trata de un hecho del pasado que tiene consecuencias en el presente.
