Hola a todos,

La frase en cuestión es del libro Tinta invisible de Javier Peña.

El día después de la muerte de mi padre, mi madre le pidió a mi hermano que se llevase cuanto antes el sillón que habían dispuesto en el salón de casa para que pasase sus últimos días con mayor comodidad. Era un sillón negro diseñado especialmente para personas enfermas, no sé muy bien cuáles eran sus beneficios, solo que mi madre no quería volver a tenerlo delante..........

Mi padre se pasaba en aquel sillón de la mañana a la noche, hasta que mi madre lo ayudaba a acostarse. He insistido tantas veces en que no podía leer que no me queda duda de que mi insistencia es un reflejo del dolor por que no leyese mi segunda novela. Intentó escuchar audiolibros, pero estaba demasiado acostumbrado a la letra impresa como para adaptarse al formato en sus circunstancias. Supongo que el cerebro se niega a hacer esfuerzos tan poco rentables. Fernando, le diría su cerebro —lo llamaría por su nombre como las enfermeras—, ¿para qué vamos a esforzarnos en esto ahora?

Sentado en aquel sillón negro, mi padre se había quedado sin historias. Como un organismo desnutrido que no sabe de dónde sacar energía y ataca a sus propios órganos vitales, su cerebro se dedicaba a consumirse a sí mismo. Durante las semanas que mi padre estuvo en aquel sillón, su único pensamiento versaba sobre su muerte.

I'm not sure what "He insistido tantas veces en que no podía leer" means in this context. What I know for sure is that the one who couldn't read was his father.

So I take "He insistido tantas veces en que no podía leer" to mean something like "I have said so many times that he (my father) couldn't read because he didn't read my second novel."

Am I correct?

My wild guess that have occurred to me just now is that maybe the author means that he did not read aloud to his father.

He insisted that his father was not able to read (no longer capable of reading), but his insistence was a reflection of the pain he felt knowing that his father would never read my second novel.

That's just my interpretation. Perhaps it's not the definitive one.

I'd only change the second part to "because it hurt me so much that he was no longer able to read my second novel"

His father wouldn't take advantage of audiobooks so I supose the author not even tried to. Why? Well, it's up to the reader to judge on the strained father-son relation and the possible atempt for the book to bring some closure on the matter.
