La frase en cuestión es del libro Tinta invisible de Javier Peña.

El escritor suizo Robert Walser terminó sus días ingresado en una institución psiquiátrica. No está claro cuál era su patología, pero parece que, en cierto modo, para Walser suponía un alivio vivir allí. En los años anteriores las cosas no le habían ido bien, sentía que no encajaba en el mundo de los cuerdos. Había sufrido para conseguir un techo y algo que llevarse a la boca. En la clínica eso lo tenía garantizado. Walser pasó allí los últimos 27 años de su vida.

Un editor llamado Carl Seelig, que admiraba el trabajo del escritor, se acercó al sanatorio en 1942 para proponerle un nuevo libro con textos ya publicados y otros que permanecían inéditos. Walser mostró poco entusiasmo con la idea, consideraba que su fracaso editorial estaba justificado y que su tiempo como escritor había pasado. Accedió, eso sí, a dar paseos con Seelig.

Era un gran caminante; el primer paseo que dio con el editor se prolongó durante varios kilómetros. Walser se mantuvo en silencio gran parte del camino, pero su lengua acabó soltándose cuando su acompañante le habló de sus autores favoritos. Seelig le preguntó entonces por qué estaba ingresado en aquel sanatorio. Porque soy un mal escritor, contestó Walser. En otro momento, cuando Seelig le insistió en por qué no escribía algo allí dentro, Walser le dijo su frase más famosa: «Yo no estoy aquí para escribir, estoy aquí para estar loco.»

Yes, the way it was written isn't totally clear, since the determiner (sus) could be referring to either man's favorite authors.
I believe, though, that it was Seelig's favorites (since he was doing almost all the talking and the author didn't think it necessary to clarify who the referent was). And it was only at Seelig's mention of favorite authors that sparked more interest in Walser than anything else prior. We weren't told what Walser said about the favorite authors. We weren't told if Seelig included Walser in the list. We simply weren't told enough. We only learned that Walser deemed himself a bad author.
