Poli, I don't have an unequal symbol in my Spanish keyboard. Have you got one? Of course, I could have looked for it in the ASCII code or whatever, but I didn't. This is not the first time I see this pair of symbols meaning unequal, but it's not a convention, just a lazy habit.

I've seen >< be used as a smilie to mean an angry face
Also in some programming languages <> and != mean unequal.
