When I was first taught Spanish, instead of using the term taifa, I was taught patria chica. I don't think that Spain is the only country made up of taifas. To a greater or lesser extent all large countries are.

Chica in that sense is American. Taifa is probably a peculiarly peninsular word.

"Taifa" was the name given to a region controlled by a king by the muslims.
"reinos de taifas" were all the independent regions of the arabian Spain
