In these new examples, the uncertainty is still in the present (You still suppose, because you don't know, that x happened 10 years ago). Therefore se supone. But your previous example, although the same day, was something you expected (the car ride) which did not happen, and therefore is not a present state of supposing. So I find it odd that se supone is still correct.

No es exactamente lo mismo decir "se supone" que "supongo". "Se supone" es más general, lo supones tú y más gente y no tiene por qué referirse a este mismo momento; "supongo" es algo que supongo yo en este preciso instante:

Supongo que la reunión es mañana, nadie me lo ha confirmado todavía.
Se supone que la reunión es mañana, estamos esperando que nos lo confirmen. (...estoy esperando que me lo confirmen)

Supongo que me iré de viaje durante mis vacaciones, aunque ya lo decidiré cuando llegue el momento.
Se supone que la gente se va de viaje durante las vacaciones; eso dicen las estadísticas. (...eso me dicen las estadísticas)

¿Me das un ejemplo en contexto? Tal vez "it is to be presumed", "presumably it's the case".
