Some time I called an embassy where the recording said "for information in English, press the numeral key", so I thought the name of the " # " sign would have to be related to "number". @irmamar: quizá lo conozcas como "ta-te-tí" (?)

I was referring to calling tic-tac-toe a game of gato. In English, when the draw occurs while playing tic-tac-toe, we say 'cat' and we draw the letter 'C' over the top of the game. Then, we draw another grid (#) - gato - and have another go at it.
