"La cucaracha" es además un paso de baile (de los bailes cubanos - chacha, rumba, etc.). Según entiendo se llama así porque es como pisar una cucaracha para matarla.

It's a basic step, not the basic step. The basic step is forward, replace*, close, back, replace, close. This is side, replace, close, side, replace, close.

* In the context of dancing, this means "Transfer your weight from one foot to the other without taking a step".
