I have the HarperCollins Unabridged in my office for reference. It's about 5 inches thick, but worth it. For a more portable dictionary, I like the New World Spanish/English Dictionary by Salvatore Ramondino. It's a pocket-sized paperback, albeit a little on the thick side as well, but it's easy to carry around and quite comprehensive. (I also like the typeface, but I guess I shouldn't be revealing those idiosyncracies ) Those are the two dictionaries I would recommend.

Corrections above. There is no gender associated with most inanimate objects in English. The pronoun we use is it.
