Ah, if it's the verb manifest, I'd interpret the phrase as "put into existence" which also makes sense in the above situation (though pretty much means the same thing).

La cantidad de muertes pone de manifesto la importancia de seguro automotor.

I would say highlight means destacar, to put something out to everybody's sight...aunque tambien podria usarse asi, pero no me suena mucho, porque yo me sueno solo.... sabes?
