Descubrir la sopa de ajo

I'd never heard it either, but it sounds similar to "descubrir el hilo negro", which means to claim or believe that one has discovered something new when it's actually something quite ordinary.

En Chile we say:"Más viejo que el hilo negro" también.

Agree with angelica. One who discovers a quite ordinary thing -"sopa de ajo" (garlic' soup) it's a very easy-to-do soup. It's also very cheap, and as old as man -.

Well, I for one have never heard of that expression. I didn't even know there was "garlic soup"!

Yo sí la había oído. ¡Vaya que sí! Es bastante común en España. Es parecido a contestar a la pregunta: ¿De qué color era el caballo blanco de Santiago? Es como una "verdad de Perogrullo". Verdad de Perogrullo: Cosa muy sabida por todos y que es ocioso repetir. (La frase proverbial se completa con «que a la mano cerrada le llamó [o llamaba] puño». Es casi como un tópico repetido, algo que cualquiera sabe, una vulgaridad. Cuando se usa esta frase, puede tener un tono irónico o sarcástico. Me podríais decir a mí: "Ya lo hemos entendido con las aportaciones anteriores... no hace falta que vengas tú a descubrir la sopa de ajo", como queriendo decir que América ya está descubierta... O si vengo a decir: "Se ha demostrado que hay vida alienígena en otros sectores de la galaxia" (como si fuera algo muy nuevo) y me contestarais: "Venga, no vengas ahora descubriendo la sopa de ajo... eso ya se sabía hace mucho..." Los ejemplos pueden ser millares... Lo curioso es que tanto la Academia como Moliner no dan la expresión, aunque sí: Sopas de ajo. Sopa muy corriente hecha con pan y ajos fritos.
Si se busca en la net, hay muchos ejemplos de su uso, verbigracia: "A lo mejor acabo de descubrir la sopa de ajo y todos lo sabéis pero a mí me sorprendió."
Por cierto, mi madre hacía una sopa de ajo fenomenal... lo que me recuerda que hace 20 años que no la he vuelto a probar... (miento... una vez, hace unos 4 ó 5, teniendo yo un constipado de narices "de narices", me hice una sopa de ajo y cebolla, y se me quitó el resfriado en menos de 12 horas, así, sin más. La expresión quizá provenga de lo eficaz que es el ajo como antibiótico casero, conocido en España por sus poderes curativos...) Bueno, quizá habrá que volver a descubrir esas sopitas de ajo...
