This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for December 6, 2009

educación (feminine noun (la)) — education, politeness, upbringing, manners, breeding. Look up educación in the dictionary

Vio que traía las manos ocupadas y ni por educación se acercó a ayudarme.

educación vs estudios

Hola a todos. Esta es mi primera pregunta en este foro.

Me gustaría saber como traducir "educated person" o "educated youth" cuando se refiere a una persona que ha estudiado mucho. Si yo diría "una persona educada" o "un jóven educado", ¿es claro que NO quiero decir que es cortés, sino que tiene muchos años de la escuela? ¿Será mejor decir "un jóven con estudios" o "con estudios superiores"?

Gracias de antemano, y por favor corríjame cualquier error que haya hecho en español. Vivo en Estados Unidos y mi primer idioma es inglés norteamericano.

Lo has dicho bien con lo de "con estudios". También puedes usar culto (una persona culta) o tener educación avanzada/superior (una persona que tiene ...).

Creo que hay diferencia entre una persona con estudios, o con estudios superiores, de una persona culta. Hay gente sin estudios académicos que son muy cultos, porque la cultura está al alcance de cualquiera. Yo diría una persona con estudios (o con estudios superiores).

A todo esto en Chile por lo menos, ser educado se refiere más a tener buenas maneras.

Educación académica o estudios sería el otro término.
