"me preguntó de qué país vengo'
Vi eso escrito. Lo entiendo, ("He asked me what country I come from")

But the question is more understanding that yourself are asking you, instead of in the first question is more understanding what country I come from this question is more nature.

¿De dónde vienes/venís?
De EEUU / Vengo de EEUU / Soy de EEUU (where I think the first is the most used and the last the less used one, but all are synoyms)

As it's been said, there is nothing wrong with saying "vengo de (tal país)", if you want to say what country you're from. It's certainly not the first choice of everyone, but it's correct and often heard.

Even if this is already clear, this thread reminded me one of the lyrics by "Les Luthiers.
