I think so. It hasn't to do specifically with accepting some ugly facts but with being forced to do something very unpleasant, or inevitable actions one does unwillingly.

También en italiano existe la expresión, traducida literalmente, para tragarse el sapo: ingoiare il rospo. No se usa la forma reflexiva como en castellano.
