I like that one, I've never seen it before. I would say "his eyes popped out of his head" or "his eyes were on stalks". A German would say "er kriegte Stielaugen".

"Salírsele los ojos (de las órbitas) a alguien" o "írsele los ojos a alguien" se usa en general para decir que algo le llama tanto la atención a alguien, que abre mucho los ojos para verlo mejor.

*cough* I have been taking ... since, not I took ... since. "Since" implies continued action, so a preterite, a one-off action, is illogical. (Sorry - I couldn't resist You can tear my Spanish apart when I become brave enough to try it )

So, my (hopefully) corrected sentence is:

I have been studying English for over 25 years. I took private lessons when I was very young and later I started studying by myself.
...And since a few months, people in Tomisimo have been helping me correct a few vices I'd acquired over the years.
