"la infancia de la razón"

In the passage below, the first sentence makes sense to me without the phrase "de la razón", so what does this phrase add?


"La travesía en el Whisper parecía un recuerdo lejano, de esos que se pierden en la infancia de la razón y el paso del tiempo confunde con sueños. De aquellos días, para Nina, tan sólo perduró el recuerdo nítido de Ferrán, sus ojos azules y el tacto suave de sus labios. Lo demás se había difuminado en el olvido, como si jamás hubiese existido. Sin embargo, cuando el sol tardío caía sobre el horizonte y daba paso a la noche estrellada, Nina experimentaba cierta nostalgia, pasando aquellas horas en silencio."

It's the difference in meaning between "one of those (memories) that are lost in the infancy of reason" and "... are lost in childhood." The way I see it, the two don't convey the exact same idea.
