Atraso

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for October 22, 2009

atraso (masculine noun (el)) — slowness, delay, time lag, lateness. Look up atraso in the dictionary

Llegué con 40 minutos de atraso pero nadie me dijo nada.
I arrived 40 minutes late but nobody seemed to care.

Is that the common usage for this term? With "de"? Or could I say something like: "Tu nota en la papel está baja debido a tu atraso." ???

In the last phrase seemed to care.

What does it means?

I don't can match the phrase with the Spanish's one..

Well, in English, "no one cares" means that maybe no one noticed, or no one said anything, but basically that it was not important to anyone that the person was 40 minutes late. It implies a bit of hurt feelings.

No parecía importarle a nadie.

@ Crotalito: llegué 40 minutos tarde, pero a nadie pareció importarle

I'd say "llegué con 40 minutos de retraso", but I think there is a thread about it

I'd say "atraso" in other contexts:

Esto es un atraso: nos han quitado las calculadoras y nos han dado lápiz y papel para hacer las cuentas

Yo enseño algebra en el colegio. Siempre usamos las calculadores. No me gusta cómputo con la papel y la lápiz ... ni para mi, ni para mis estudiantes.

Ah, pensaba lo contrario. Normalmente los profesores de matemáticas prefieren que los alumnos aprendan bien a hacer las cuentas Pero asignaturas como álgebra ya son palabras mayores
