I'm having trouble understanding this sentence

Yo se la regalé.

Is it "I gifted him it"? What is the "se" there for? Thanks a lot.

In this case, "se" is an indirect object pronoun for "él"/"ella".
"La" is a direct object pronoun for a feminine thing that has been given to him/her.

Since there are two pronouns, the reader should know what thing has been presented to what person.

For example, if I gave María a wrist-chain:

Yo le regalé la pulsera a María.

"Se" will substitute "a María" (whom I gave it to) and "la" will substitute "la pulsera" (what I gave to her).

Oh yes! I forgot that when there is a direct object pronoun being used, "se" is used as a surrogate for "le", and is not considered reflexive. Thank you very much.
