Muchas gracias

I would

I would use era in this paragraph. It sounds better to me unless you were putting the emphasis on the the fact that this period of his life is completely over.

You can use both, with no big difference (perhaps better with era).

to make it "recent" use "ha trabajado" "ha renunciado"
todays newspaper

Don't use "practicaba" for sport,is a translation of"practice", for sport use "ejercicio" o "entrenamiento". "Practicar" is more for laboratory, chess or shooting.
"Tal como" is the way/art you make something like another person, not for how hard.

The team was weak because of lack of practice.
He was late for football practice.
Practice your lines for the play.
Practice what you preach!

Don't you first train (entrenar) then you practice (practicar)? In anything you do? You know what they say.... Practice makes perfect! La practica hace al maestro.

Thanks!
Elaina

I'll give you my opinions, si en algo estoy mal, espero que sosia o alguien más me corrija.

The verb practicar is used much like to practice is used with doctors. As in a doctor practices medine.

He plays sports.
El practica la caza. He hunts/He goes hunting/He's a hunter.

Now let's see how we would translate the English word to practice in different situations:

Practice (rehearsal)

practice - ensayo
music practice - ensayo de música
let's practice this song - vamos a ensayar esta canción
let's rehearse this play - vamos a ensayar este drama

Practice (training)

practice - entrenamiento
we practiced soccer all day - entrenamos todo el día el futbol

Practice (habit)

It's his usual practice to leave his office door open - Es su costumbre dejar abierta la puerta de su ofician.

Idioms -
