En que esto le decían
Hola!

¿Qué significa "en que esto le decían" en este contexto?

"El propio volvió sin contestación y sin la carta de la señorita. Después de muchos afanes, de mil pesquisas, en la capital del concejo le habían admitido la misiva, dándole seguridades de entregar el pliego al pintor, que estaría de vuelta en aquella fonda en que esto le decían, antes de una semana."

En esa fonda, le dijeron al mensajero (el propio) que le entregarían el pliego al pintor antes de una semana, que es cuando estiman que vuelva.
