Do you agree with my explanation?

-We have to be able to assess one's ability correctly. (=ability in general)
-We have to be able to assess one's abilities correctly. (=different abilities in general)

I think they can be used to refer to the same situation, depending on how the speaker views the thing. Do you agree?
