Could someone please do me the favor of checking my attempted translation of an article, and helping me with the question-marked parts.
I greatly appreciate it. My attempt: Hours earlier, the South African minister of defense, Lindiwe Sisulu, confirmed that the Nobel Peace prize of 1993 was deposited (used?) so he could receive (?) a laproscopy, a minimally invasive procedure which allows (doctors?) to view a patient's abdominal cavity. Mil gracias.

Hmm: perhaps this is a better translation, at least to U.S. English: Hours earlier, the South African Minister of Defense, Lindiwe Sisulu, confirmed that the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize recipient was admitted to the hospital for a laproscopy, a minimally invasive procedure which allows doctors to view a patient's abdominal cavity. |

@marmoset: This is a figure of speech called "synecdoche" (in Spanish, "sinécdoque"), which can be found in most languages and in which a specific trait is used to talk about a more general thing (or a broad concept is used to talk about a specific thing). Like when someone says "we need more hands" meaning "we need more workers", or when someone refers to "the steel" to talk about a sword.
