Pon tu cel sobre la mesa. Place/put your cellphone on the table.
Ponlo en su lugar. Put it in its place.
¿Quién puso eso aquí? Who put this here?
¿Quién lo puso? Who did it? *
Yo lo pondría en este lugar. I would put it in this place.
Yo lo pondré mejor en esta mesa. I'll put it on this table instead.
Si lo pusieras aquí sería mejor. If you put it here it would be better.
Ya lo puse en un lugar más cómodo. I already put it in a more convenient place.
Translations above. Ask questions.
* 'Who put it' doesn't sound right to the English ear. Since we already know that the verb is put, we would normally substitute the auxiliary verb do in these cases. Did is the past tense form of the helping verb. It is used in questions, like 'Did you put it here?' If the answer to this question is 'No,' we would then ask 'Who did it, then?'

to place = colocar
to put = poner

I will place it on the shelf = Lo colocaré sobre la repisa
I will put it on the shelf = Lo pondré sobre la repisa
