The example given is subjunctive because of the negated thought in the main clause.

The present subjunctive is not used in a si clause when the main verb is in the present or future tense (unless the main clause gives reason to take that course).

@fglorca: La construcción 'voy a estudiar' no es el tiempo futuro; 'estudiaré', sí.

Entonces, ¿el uso de 'esté' aquí es incorrecto?

"Si no esté en clase el mes que viene, pasaré tiempo en la playa.

¿Me podrían poner un ejemplo en la que el uso de 'esté' con 'si' pueda ser correcto?

Wrong tense of the subjunctive.

Use "estuviera"

But your phrase does not make sense.

Please check what you are thinking in English and do not lose track of it.

Hi Chileno, many thanks for your reply. I don't think I can use an Imperfect Subjunctive here:

"Si no esté en clase el mes que viene, pasaré tiempo en la playa.

If I'm not in class next month (maybe the teacher won't show up for some of the classes), then I will spend time on the beach.

You are right that imperfect subjunctive is not the right conjugation here. With conditional sentences that talk about a certain situation happening in the present so another can be completed in the future, you need to use the present indicative.

- Si me gano la lotería, viajaré por todo el mundo.
- Si no te molesta, voy a ver la televisión.
- Si no estoy en clase...

Right.

I though you wanted to say:

If I weren't in class I would be at the beach.
