It's feminine, but you must use "el", only when saying directly.
it's a special case, like agua, arma , hambre, "feminine" words wich "accents" in this first a, that is, they hava an "a átona", "a-trend", "/a/". "el ama de casa es trabajador sin salario más importante de la sociedad" In other forms it's always feminine "esa/aquella ama de casa", "toda ama de casa debe...." No......if you read the article that Sosia included in his post it will explain why it's
"El Ama de Lllaves" "El Agua" "El Hacha" In the same note..... "La Radio" etc

Sosia already provided the definitive answer, most authoritatively. Ama is a feminine noun, but takes a masculine article in the singular form so that the initial, stressed a sound of the noun is distinguishable from the final a sound of the article.
These nouns are all femenine: el ama (plural = las amas) el agua (plural = las aguas) el alma, las almas el águila, las águilas el hambre |

It should also be added (as Sosia pretty much already said), that any additional adjectives should be feminine to agree with the noun.
El agua sucia. Las aguas negras. Just so you can get your mind around the idea, these words are femenine, and el is used as the singular determiner for phonetic/pronunciation purposes only, much like we say "a watermelon, but an apple" in English.
