Adverbial Phrases
The abverbial phrase is bolded, and the word it modifies is italicized.
1. Simmer the stew gently over low heat. 2. The coach is always tougher on newcomers. 3. Hal delivered the package to the wrong house. 4. That barn was hit by lightning during the storm. Note: "by lightning" and "during the storm" both modify was hit 5. The squirrel ran across the roof and jumped into the tree. Note: "across the roof" modify ran and "into the tree" modify jumped 6. Anna swam far beyond the raft. 7. The couple sailed their boat around the world. 8. Come home before dark. 9. The flood waters rose high over the breakwater and onto the roadway. Note: both "over the breakwater" and "onto the roadway" modify high 10. Run into the backyard and take the lawnmower out of the rain. Note: "into the backyard" modify run and "out of the rain" modify take 11. The pilot banked the plane toward the left. 12. This book is different from other mysteries. 13. Sharo spoke with great feeling and confidence. 14. The tourists followed the guide through the museum. 15. We will arrive sometime after noon. 16. The committee is eager for volunteers. 17. That author often writes about marine life for national magazines. Note: both "about marine life" and "for national magazines" modify writes? 18. All the guests were happy for the bride and groom. 19. The burglar alarm rings both on the premises and at the police station. Note: both "on the premises" and "at the police station" modifies rings? 20. The child moved closer to his mother. |

How are 6 and 9 wrong? we did them together in class. that's what we got #20. my teacher said to his mother modifies closer. |

Well, I guess I can see your teacher's point. Adverbial phrases act as adverbs. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. So, technically, yes, an adverbial phrase can be said to be modifying another adverb in a sentence.
