I have heard that word in the movie.
But I'm not very sure about the translation, I don't want to give you an incorrect translation, but I have hear about that word that is interpreted as Que esta pasando. Better that a native answers your question.

Yes, as you have said, there're diversity of ways in that you can give an expression for a only word.
In the old case that you said. What is going on? What's happening? Really they mean the same solely that in different forms. That was your question?

What is going on?
¿Qué pasa? [what happens?] ¿Qué está pasando? [what is happening?] ¿Qué te traes? [what are you up to?] ¿Qué onda? [what's up?]

Wow these are both good questions and answers too. But since the language has everything to do with mascular and feminine specifications, can I say ''¿ Qué paso?'' when refering to a male and ''¿qué está pasanda?'' when talking to a female?

No you can't, but I can understand why you ask. That happens to adjectives, but pasando is a participle which never changes its ending.
