Ella enseñó mucho sin presumir nunca de nada
¿Puede significar que ella enseñó mucho sin esperar nada en returno (sin esperar nunguna recompensa)?

Hace falta contexto. Pero una de las interpretaciones -dependiendo de un contexto que mezcle enseñanza con elogio- es que más que enseñar "se dejó apre(he)nder". Se refiere a ese tipo de personas que tienen la inmensa generosidad de compartir todo lo que saben sin poner como condición ninguna contraprestación, ni siquiera un agradecimiento, con independencia de si han ganado fortunas con ello o muerto en la pobreza.
En ese tipo de frase en general se ponderan las virtudes y no se está haciendo ningún tipo de balance que no sea el moral.

No, no tiene nada que ver con el altruismo. Significa que ella sabía mucho pero nunca fue tan pedante como para pregonar que sabía mucho. Simplemente enseñaba lo que sabía.

No hablaba nunca de nada (No hablaba sobre ningún tema) No se reía nunca de nada (Nunca se reía) Sin presumir nunca de nada (no presumió nunca, no comentó lo mucho que sabía sobre ningún tema) Saludos

“Frida Kahlo fue un ser extraordinario que llenó parte de mi vida, y de mi amor; me enseñó muchas cosas y aprendí mucho, y sin presumir de nada. ¡Agarré el cielo con las manos, con cada palabra, cada mañana! Lo mismo, cada tarde, cada noche. Se iba llenando de luz, de mariposas que vuelan en la noche, la noche de zafir, adornando el cielo, con las golondrinas de Capistrano, que vienen a nosotros a llenarnos de cosas... y las golondrinitas. Así era Frida” Un caso más de "cada quien entiende lo que se le cantan las pe******". Los dos artículos se contradicen, aunque uno es la única fuente declarada del otro, y el original es una pesadilla de edición y tecleo. Gramaticalmente, quien no está presumiendo de nada en la frase es Chabela Vargas. "Presumir de nada" y "presumir nunca de nada" tienen interpretaciones divergentes. Y presumir tiene dos sentidos posibles. Todo deja 8 posibilidades; la mitad de ellas no cuadran del todo; las otras sí. Los conceptos hiperbólicos tampoco ayudan a dilucidarlo. Por eso se pide contexto.

If by "without being didactic" you meant "without a deliberate intention to teach and/or moralize", that's comes naturally from any of many possible interpretations.
If we go beyond the nightmare of analyzing who wanted to say what in those articles à la Frankenstein, it all boils to Kahlo teaching valuable things without even trying to. I don't know how to put it into words, but a sort of "masterdom in the eye of any beholder, and not by playing-the-master" (I'm afraid that in English master and doctor are too far from teacher, so I don't know if I manage to convey the meaning)
