A riddle

This is an extract from the first page of my favourite novel. Do you know what book I'm talking about?Do you like it? I think it's the best ever...
"I always found in myself a dread of west and a love of east. Where I ever got such an idea I cannot say, unless it could be that the morning came over the peaks of the Gabilans and the night drifted back from the ridges of the Santa Lucias. It may be that the birth and death of the day had some part in my feeling about the two ranges of mountains."

Al Este del Edén. I love the film too, but the book is so much better... James Dean is unforgettable, anyway...

Estimados hispanoparlantes,
Necesito su asisténcia. Pensaba que cuál significaba which.
Ahora veo que cuál a veces significa what tambien.
Gracias

I've moved the discussion of when to use qué and cuál to it's own thread so that it will be easier to find/reference in the future.
