Meterse en caja fuerte

I thought this meant getting into a safe or a strongbox, but a friend of mine from Mexico used it today to remark on someone who was wearing mismatched colors - in that case brown socks with black shoes, but he said it can be used for any awkward clothing combination.
(???)

Hmmm...

I have never heard that expression. I'll add it to my collection

" ¿Dónde es el carnaval? "

It's my motto for teasing on fashion... a very worn out expression because of it's frecuent use all over the world. But classies taste better with repetition.
