Caro
The hardware shop is too expensive.
• La ferretería es demasiado cara. Does ‘caro’ need to change to ‘cara’ even though it’s not the shop itself that’s expensive, but the items for sale inside the shop? Many thanks in advance. |

Yes, it does; the fact that at the semantic level "la ferretería" serves as a shorthand way to refer to the items for sale in the shop does not alter the requirement of number/gender agreement between noun and adjective at the grammatical level.

¿No debería ser "demasiada cara"?

Me parece que no, Premium.
Demasiado + nombre: • Tengo que hacer demasiadas cosas hoy. • Hay demasiados papeles en el suelo. • Hay demasiadas personas en mi casa. • Tengo demasiadas fotos. Demasiado + adjetivo: • Mi madre está demasiado cansada. • Esta casa es demasiado pequeña. • Somos demasiado fuertes. |

@Premium: fglorca está en lo correcto. "Demasiado" aquí funciona como adverbio que modifica un adjetivo. Sólo hay concordancia de género y número cuando es un adjetivo.
