That is indeed correct when you wish to indicate that a meal is very highly spiced, but when it's fresh out of the pan and literally too hot to enjoy then it's "Está demasiado caliente".

When it's the weather you are referring to then it's "¡Hace calor!"; but when referring to your own personal body temperature then it's "Tengo calor" and never, ever "Estoy caliente" - that has a very different meaning altogether! Say that and you could have a very, very pleasant surprise or more likely a slap in the kisser!

I tend to hear specific verbs rather than copula + adjective.

It's hot (spicy): pica. It's hot (temperature): quema.
