Aún vs todavía

Aún vs todavía

Sé que los dos se pueden traducir como "still", pero ¿hay alguna diferencia?

Me parece que "aún" es más como "still (después de un evento)" mientras todavía es como "still (después de algún tiempo ha pasado)." Pero, ¿es también posible usar "todavía" para decir el primer caso, y vice versa?

Aquí está la forma en que yo trato de resumirlo en la mente. En (casi?) todas las situaciones donde puedes usar "todavía", podrías tambíen sustituirla con "aún". Por el otro lado, hay usos de "aun" (sin acento/tilde) que no es equivalente a todavía.

aún = todavía (los dos llevan acento)
aun todavía

Lo que no cabe en mi explicación es el sentido de "siempre" (para todavía) que dice la RAE. No sé dónde se usa en ese sentido, pero creo que no lo he escuchado usarse de esa forma.

Para resumir el DRAE:
  • todavía / aún:
    • hasta un momento determinado
    • no obstante, sin embargo
    • en sentido concesivo
    • en sentido de encarecimiento o ponderación
  • todavía
    • siempre
  • aun
    • encarecimiento en sentido afirmativo o negativo

Bien, pues ahora me parece que en la mayor parte del tiempo los dos son sinónimos, mientras "aun" sin acento es como "even" en inglés, en las frases "even if" or "not even".

Correct. In Spanish most of the time even if = incluso si/aun cuando/aun si and not even = ni siquiera
