"Jurar" is related to English "jury" (jurado) so named because they are "sworn in." Winesses also have to swear an oath. "I swear by almighty God ....." Anyone who swears a false oath commits not only perjury but blasphemy. A mere "promise" is weaker than an oath and can be broken with less chance of retribution
