Lightbulb From which country?

Hi David!

Before I offer a suggestion, I would just like to say that I love your website. I have found it very helpful.

Yesterday I read the post on "chango" for monkey. I have often seen in many posts "say it this way in Spain", "say it this way in South America", etc.

I think, if it's not too much trouble, that it would be great if you could create some kind of code to show which words are used in which countries. Obviously, it would be way too much to break it down by every country, but maybe even just break it down to Mexico, Spain, Central and South America. Something like that.

Although, I use the dictionary all the time, it can be quite overwhelming to decide which word is the "best" word to use. The word I select might be most acceptable in Spain but not used by the Spanish speakers in Mexico.

Thanks for such a great website!

RAE (Real Acadamía Española) provides this infomation and there is a link to it a the bottom of every Tomísimo search. It's pretty good.

This is a very good suggestion, and in fact this already exists to some extent. There are several hundred words that are tagged with information as to where they are commonly used. I've put US, UK, CUBA, ES, MX etc by words that are used in the United States, United Kingdom, Cuba, Spain and Mexico respectively. I haven't been able to do it with a whole lot of words, but on an almost daily basis, I add words and improve translations in the dictionary, so it is slowly getting better.

Maybe I need to explain a bit better on the search page-- explain what all the acronyms mean etc.

And as poli says, you can also check the RAE.
