advertir (verb) — to warn, caution, advise, admonish, tip off, inform. Look up advertir in the dictionary

It also means to notice as in the examples below:
Darse cuenta de una cosa: nada más llegar, advirtieron que no eran bien recibidos.
Observar, percibir: en la imagen de la fotografía advertimos una gran variedad de efectos cromáticos.

Because English have a lot of words which come from Latin.

Ok. Irmamar said that both "advertir" and "advertise" come from Latin.
One of the definitions in the RAE for advertir is "Llamar la atención de alguien sobre algo, hacer notar u observar" i.e. to make someone notice something, which is precisely what advertisers do.

It's a false friend, Jessica. Meanings and usage in both languages are not actually related.
