Will you burn fake money at your home's door?
That is so cool. But Chinese do that some days before halloween, don't they? |

Right, here you go, details:
1.- In Spain it's called '(El dia de) todos los santos'. Here, the word muertos sounds heavy, and dia sounds like a festival, so it doesn't match. Todos los santos is a day, and halloween is an evening. Maybe el dia de las brujas, but it is also the day of the werewolves, and so on. Here, in Spanish we just say Halloween (The holy evening) 2.-All saints (souls) was created by the catholic church as a reaction against halloween, which is regarded as a pagan festival, originally from Scotland, much much older and extremely popular in Ireland where the british landlords would give away food and gifts on that day. To the Scottish tradition, Halloween is new year for the witches and you protect your home from spectres with a Jack-o-lantern. You should feel happy because if you are sad, a ghost will take your soul. 3.-We are assimilating halloween, though many many people are against celebrating it. Today the Spanish TV launched the idea that teenagers (and younger) in Spain are the halloween generation. One thing we attach to Halloween is the broadcast, 70 years ago, of the War of the worlds on the radio, read by Orson Wells. I just heard a version on Spanish radio, it was interesting. Happy Halloween again |

The point is, the day of the dead, or all souls / saints, is Nov 1st, and Halloween is 31st Oct. They are different festivals, all saints being closer to what the chinese call tomb-sweeping day. In Europe they are also felt as opposite, if you are a religious person you wouldn't celebrate Halloween, and if you are not, you would enjoy halloween more.
