Side dish

Side dishes are food that is served in addition to the main entree for the meal. For example, you might have a steak as the main item, and side dishes of corn, potatoes, beans, salad, etc. In another thread, someone mentioned that side dishes are called acompañamientos, I asked another native speaker, and she said they are called guarniciones (false cognate to garnish?). "Side dish" can also be shortened to "side", for example, in a restaurant, you might ask for some mashed potatoes to go with whatever else you ordered by asking "may I have a side of mashed potatoes?".

So, how do you say "side dish" in Spanish?

In the following picture, the entree (main dish) is a steak. The side dishes (or sides) are fried mushrooms, corn on the cob, and roasted potatoes. (Image courtesy of Flickr)

Yo usaría "guarnición".

En España se usa tanto "acompañamiento" como "guarnición", pero siempre en singular ("plato de acompañamiento" no se usa, porque se pone todo en el mismo plato)

Agree with irmamar. I use guarnición or acompañamiento, but no "plato de acompñamiento". When I call for an extra dish, I say "y un plato extra de patatas" or "y de acompañamiento un plato de patatas" or "y además un plato de patatas"
Saludos

Sosia, ¿no dirías más bien una "ración" de patatas? Yo diría mejor una ración de patatas (pimientos, etc.)
