New User Ranks

Currently, there is a rank or title under everybody's username. This reflects the user's post count.

The current titles are:

Title - Minimum number of posts
Newcomer - 1
Lounger - 10
Student - 30
Intern - 100
Teacher's Assistant - 500
Grad Student - 800
Assistant Teacher - 1000

I never really liked these when I made them, and I'd like to change them. Do you have any suggestions?

Maybe they could be like:

Grunt - 1
Peon - 10
Knave - 30
Tinker - 100
Page - 300
Archer - 500
Hunter - 1000
Raider - 1300
Scout - 1600
Warrior - 2000
Leader - 2300
Ranger - 2600
Rider - 3000
Sniper - 3300
Master - 3600
Knight - 4000
Bucaneer - 4500
King - 5000
Sage - 6000

Hmmmm.

At least one poster lamented being 'promoted' past student. Perhaps this was because we all feel like students (even after *years* of study). For those who don't post very much, 'newcomer' doesn't seem like an appropriate title, especially when the poster may be a long-time member. It's a hard call.

Maybe ranks or titles aren't needed at all. I was admittedly confused by them at first. Perhaps ranks based on number of posts may not be the best idea, either.

If you decide to stick with ranks or titles, I personally don't care for 'grunt' or 'peon.' They seem derogatory.

How about something like precious stones (opal, jade, ruby, emerald, diamond) or metals (nickel, bronze, silver, gold, platinum)?
Another idea would be to use colors. There are 7 colors in a rainbow, in a well-known order; add black, brown, and white to get 10 ranks.
You could also just use 'level 1,' or 'stage 1,' etc. That made me think of a video game. There are some possibilities there, too.

Thanks for the input Rusty, I like the precious stones idea. Of course I could always disable them altogether, or use something simple (unimaginative?) like 'Junior Member', 'Member' and 'Senior Member'. There's no limit to how many ranks there can be.

I don't care much. Three are enough.
You can also use "hoja, panfleto, folleto, cuaderno, librito, novela, tomo, imprenta, gran editorial, Biblioteca Nacional, wiklipedia..".... so the level implies the number of post, and not the level.

I don't mind much one way or the other, but I think Rusty's precious stones idea is pretty good. We could also do without ranks...

On the other hand, I can teach Spanish, while at the same time I'm learning English. As most of us I'm half student half teacher. This kind of information is for me the most valuable I may gather from other people: what are you willing to teach, and what do you want to learn. But this doesn't depend on the number of posts you've made, but on your willingness. So, it is mostly your choice.

Estoy de acuerdo. Todos aquí que dedicamos tiempo a mejorar nuestras facilidades de comunicar en un idioma segundario somos estudiantes. Mientras sigo tratando de agudizar mis capacidades (I'm almost sure this is wrong. Is alfilar mis habilidades better?), voy a ser un estudiante aunque

Repito mejorar porque las otras opciones, afilar, agudizar... no encajan.
En español, facilidades tiene que ver con fácil, nunca con capacidad.

Tampoco puedes traducir siempre skills por habilidades, pues éstas últimas suelen ser de índole física, normalmente en singular: habilidad deportiva, habilidad con el balón, habilidad con las manos; aunque también: habilidad para hacer trampas, habilidad para ganar dinero, etc.

Entonces una persona no puede tener habilidad en comunicación, pero pueden tener terner habilidad con el balón. ¿Correcto?

¿Se puede usar el verbo alfilar o agudizar metaforicamente? Me dijiste que no ecage agudizar una capacidad , pero se puede agudizar un sentido de humor (o otra cosa que no es material) o solamente un cuchillo.
