Sino is used where we would say 'rather', or similar wording. Be cautious with using pero. It is only used to advance an opposing idea. In English, we use it more often than that.

I'll let others post some sentences that'll show the difference. Chileno is good at doing that (as are others).

I like the poster to give their tries and then we correct them. I think it is one of the best ways to learn and retain any language.

Almost there: Yo no como la manzana, sino la galleta.


I hope the next examples will be useful for you:


But = pero (when you're expressing some contradiction to what you've said before)

No quería ir al cine, pero fui de todas formas y me divertí mucho.
I didn't want to go to the movies, but I went anyway and had a lot of fun.

Estaba muy cansada pero me levanté temprano a hacer ejercicio.
I was very tired, but I got up early to make some exercise.

No me gusta esa canción, pero me sé la letra.
I don't like that song, but I know the lyrics.


But = sino (when you mean "it's not this, but that")

Me equivoqué: esa canción no es de los Beatles, sino de los Rolling Stones.
I was wrong: that song is not by the Beatles, but by the Rolling Stones.

Ese no es mi reloj, sino el de mi mamá.
That's not my watch, but my mother's.

No teníamos que dar vuelta a la derecha, sino a la izquierda.
We didn't have to turn right, but left.
