Can I use this verb tense?

Todos los años voy de vacaciones a la playa, pero este verano ____ a una cabaña en las montañas cerca de los Pirineos.
The options are: 1) iba 2) fui 3) fue 4) he ido
to me, the answer should be fui, because vacaciones is already gone, but the explanation is as follows: Pregunta 2: (HE IDO) Se utiliza pretérito perfecto frente al Indefinido porque nos referimos a un periodo de tiempo NO concluido (este año).
It seems to me that the sentence refers to the vacation and not the year, so why fui is not correct?

Both answers are correct.

The present perfect will be used more in Spain. The preterit will be used more in Latin America.
