This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for August 17, 2009
freír (verb) — to fry, burn, torment, harass, annoy, bore. Look up freír in the dictionary El primero paso para preparar este platillo es freír la carne en aceite de oliva. The first step in preparing this dish is to fry the meat in olive oil.

As the previous post said this verb can also be used as slang for harass,bore...

I'd say it's as common as informal language.
También se usa: Estoy frito. = Estoy perdido. = No tengo escapatoria. ≈ I'm dead. Choqué el coche de mi papá. Estoy frito. I crashed my father's car. I'm dead. Si no pasas el examen, estás frito. If you don't succeed the exam, you're dead.

The verb "freír" (and another ones, such as imprimir, proveer, atender, etc.) has two participles, one of them regular ("freído") and the other irregular ("frito"). With the verbs freír, imprimir and proveer you can use both participles with compound tenses (not with tho others, around 70 verbs):
2. Tiene dos participios: el regular freído y el irregular frito. Ambos se utilizan indistintamente en la formación de los tiempos compuestos (he freído/he frito) y de la pasiva perifrástica (es freído/es frito), aunque hoy es mucho más frecuente el empleo de la forma irregular: «Le he frito también un par de huevos» (Olmo Iglesias [Esp. 1984]); «Aparte se habrá freído el tomate [...] con cebolla, todo muy despacio y removiendo bien» (Toharia Setas [Esp. 1985]).
