It comes from an old saw,
cuando las barbas de tu vecino veas pelar or arder pon las tuyas a remojar or en remojo = you should learn from other people’s mistakes

Literally, when you see your neighbor' [long] beard being shaved put yours to soak [in preparation for your own shaving].

poner las barbas en remojo = prepararse para algo que puede ocurrir u ocurrirá, no importa que uno se oponga | adecuarse a los cambios inevitables

tiene dos formas:

cuando las barbas de tu vecino veas arder pon las tuyas a remojar (cuídate que bien puede ocurrirte lo mismo)
cuando las barbas de tu vecino veas cortar, pon las tuyas a remojar (para que cuando te pase lo mismo no sufras tanto, o porque es conveniente seguir la corriente, o porque es señal de un cambio al cual no hay que resistirse)

Ejemplo:

-Tanto despotricar contra las tragaperras. Que eran un vicio. Que no querías esa clase de gente en el bar ¡Y ahora tú también!
-Es cierto, pero tuve que poner las barbas en remojo porque la clientela se me iba a otros bares.
