Intentar salirse de los tópicos

I think it means breaking away from the ordinary but I'm not sure.

Nunca lo había escuchado así. Para mí "tópico" es un "punto/lugar" muy particular.

Maybe if you say "salirse de la norma" it would mean breaking away from the ordinary.

Me suena razonable tu interpretación, Poli.
Nunca lo había oído, pero "tópico" es un lugar común (un cliché), así que supongo que "salirse de los tópicos" es desprenderse de lo que todo el mundo hace/piensa/dice...

Según el contexto podría ser algo como "to avoid stereotyping".

Sí, aquí es una expresión habitual. Se pueden seguir los tópicos (la norma, lo establecido como habitual) o se puede salir de ellos. Algunos artistas salieron de los tópicos (del gusto habitual de su época) y no fueron comprendidos; su reconocimiento llegó más tarde.

Típico es lo habitual de un país o una región; también lo es de una clase, de un modelo, de la naturaleza de las cosas. Tópico es algo habitual, repetido, aceptado como bueno (no es habitual de).

Es un tópico que las mujeres dejen de trabajar cuando se casan.
Yo me río de los típicos tópicos.
