Que significa fathom?

Hola, leí esta frase: "I cannot fathom any way out of this" y no entiendo la palabra "fathom"... me podrian ayudar por favor.

Es idiomático y significa entender. El sustantivo fathom es una medida náutica de la hondura del agua. Entonces I cannot fathom this significa que no puede encontrar el fondo y suele siginifica en forma de metáfora que no entiende alguna cosa.

entender en el sentido de apreciar en su totalidad, encontrarle la vuelta, encontrar el meollo, explicarse una causa, pergeñar una solución, desentrañar un misterio, descifrar un significado. Es entender hasta llegar a la totalidad de lo que hay que entender, como cuando se sondea (fathom) para saber a cuántas brazas (fathom) exactas está el fondo.

Sí tienes razón, pero debe saber que el término can't fathom es mucho más común fathom, y significa no entiende. Example: many older people can't fathom new computer technology.

Sí, pero la frase de Katha se traduce "no puedo encontrarle una salida a esto". Los hispanoparlantes tenemos problemas para entender la diferencia entre understand y fathom. Sólo recientemente yo logré adquirir cierta familiaridad y confianza con el término.

Piensa en cómo puede interpretar un hispanoparlante el hecho de que fathom es entender en casos así:

Entiendo el porqué haces esto = I fathom you reasons for doing this

Fathom es entender algo de principio a fin, del derecho y del revés, de pe a pa, llegar hasta el fondo del asunto o ubicarse en un tema de manera de abrazarlo y controlarlo y no sucumbir a la confusión. Y fathom es también utilizar el ingenio para comprender una situación en profundidad, verla en perspectiva y solucionar problemas.

Yes, the charlatan appeared to fathom the reason of existence is something that would be understood, but the term is most commonly used in the negative. As a child I couldn't fathom algebra, or he speaks with an accent that is unfathomable. On the other hand it would be odd to say, as a child I fathomed alegebra but less strange to say he speaks with an accent that's fathomable.

I would recommend using it in the negative but in the positive it doesn't always work.

Yes, that is a perfect use of to not fathom, and it's just like no me explico.
