I have tried to teach myself Dutch. My father who was an Afrikaner, taught me some Afrikaans when I was young. I learnt German at school, so I already had a lot of the ingredients needed for Dutch. Dutch people say my accent is German and the Germans think I am a Dutchman!

Ah! Wel if you remember any Afrikaans this will obviously be very helpful as well..
But then again German and Dutch do have a lot of similarities like you say, so it will be a sinch for you..
Haha interetsting that the Germans think you are Dutch.. I suppose you will have no problem learning the Dutch pronunciation in that case.
Because we went to Germany and Austria so often I learnt it from very young on. My accent sounds almost Austrian, so Germans sometimes mistake me for an Austrian.
Well they can' t tell I am Dutch anyway, or so they say.
